Past and Present

Almshouses date back over a thousand years, originally offered by monasteries and later founded by private individuals or civic benefactors. Today, they provide charitable housing to people experiencing financial hardship—offering security, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Our own Chandos Flats date from 1573, and we proudly continue their legacy.

As Trustees, we are continually working to enhance residents’ experience and future-proof our properties.

We are always keen to welcome new Trustees who bring fresh insight, lived experience, and a commitment to local wellbeing. Together, we oversee the maintenance and improvement of our properties, ensure residents’ housing needs are met, and preserve the long-term future of this valuable local accommodation resource.
